Why is my Baby having Diaper Blowouts?

We’ve all been there- you’re already 15 minutes late for your appointment, you pull sweet baby out of their car seat and then you wonder, “Hmm, why are you wet?” Oh no. The dreaded blow out! Pee (or worse- poo!) has oozed right out of your baby’s diaper all over their outfit and car seat. Once one blowout happens, usually several more follow over the next few days unless you can solve the issue.

I’ll share with you what I’ve found helps me avoid blowouts and a few items that can help survive one. As an Amazon Affiliate, I make a commission for qualifying purchases. Thank you for supporting another Mama!

What Causes Diaper Blowouts

Diaper blowouts happen when a baby’s diaper fails, usually resulting in a messy situation. Several factors can contribute to this:

  1. Incorrect Size: Using a diaper that’s too small or too big can lead to leaks and blowouts. If the diaper doesn’t fit snugly around the legs and waist, there’s more room for leaks.
  2. Poor Fit: Sometimes, the way the diaper is put on can affect its effectiveness. If it’s not snugly fastened around the legs or if the leg cuffs aren’t properly positioned, leaks are more likely to occur.
  3. Absorbency: A diaper that isn’t absorbent enough might leak faster, especially if it’s overwhelmed by the baby’s output, leading to blowouts.
  4. Delayed Changing: If a baby stays in a wet or soiled diaper for too long, it can exceed the diaper’s capacity, leading to leaks and blowouts.
  5. Positioning: When babies move, crawl, or shift positions, it can cause the contents to move to areas where the diaper might not provide enough coverage, resulting in leaks.
  6. Type of Waste: The consistency of a baby’s stool can also play a role. Runnier stools are more likely to leak compared to thicker ones.
  7. Digestive Changes: Introducing new foods or changes in the baby’s diet can lead to changes in stool consistency, potentially causing leaks.

Preventing Diaper Blowouts

Ensure the diaper is the right size and properly fitted

First and foremost, your baby’s diaper needs to be the correct size to capture their waste and be properly fitted around their waist and legs. Ensure the diaper fits your baby correctly because diapers that are too small or too big increase the likelihood of leaks.

Make sure the diaper is snug around the legs and waist. Ensure the diaper is placed correctly. The leg cuffs and back band should be outwards and not tucked in. Adjust the leg cuffs and waistband to fit comfortably but securely as needed to get a good seal.

Pro Mama Tip: If your baby is a boy, they way they are pointing can actually cause them to leak! Make sure they are pointing down into their diaper when you change them to help avoid major leaks.

Change diapers frequently

Regularly check and change diapers, especially after feedings or when the baby wakes up. Avoid letting the diaper stay too full for too long. Check the diaper periodically to see if it’s reaching its absorbency limit. Change if needed, even if it hasn’t reached its recommended time.

It goes without saying diapers have their limits and some claim to be absorbent for 12 hours, but just won’t make it that long depending on your baby’s day. When my little guy drinks more than usual they fill up very quickly and you can’t exactly plan for it.

Pro Mama Tip: If you’re going for a car ride, consider changing them before you leave. The snugness of the car seat and the baby’s positioning seem to make blowout happen more frequently.

Choose the right diaper

Picking the right diaper is half the blowout battle. Some brands might fit your baby’s body shape better than others. Experiment with different brands to find the one that works best for your baby. If you’re still expecting, try putting a few brands you’d like to try on your registry so that you can try them out without committing.

Ensure you’re using a diaper with adequate absorbency for your baby’s needs. Consider using an overnight diaper for long sleep periods. They’re more absorbent for when you baby may go longer without a change.

Pro Mama Tip: When my baby starts having blow outs consistently (2 or 3 days in a row), I’ve notice that the weight range provided on the diaper package may not apply for my baby. You may need to size up your diaper even if your baby is well within their current diapers weight range! Don’t be afraid to try sizing up.

Blowout Clean Up

Blowouts are unavoidable- but they don’t have to be frustrating to handle if you’re prepared. Here are a few items I’ve found helpful and avoiding blowout panic.

Wet Bags

When a blowout happens, wet bags are an absolute lifesaver. They are reusable, waterproof bags that you can throw your baby’s soiled clothes right in. They save your diaper bag, car, stroller, etc. from becoming dirty and can be thrown right in the wash when you get home. I find they also help to contain the bad odors.

Car Diaper Station

Always be prepared on the go with a portable diaper station right in your car. Keep it stocked with extra diapers and one or two extra outfits. I recommend making the outfits footed pajamas so you don’t have to remember socks, pats, shirt, etc. every time you replace an outfit post blowout.

Pro Mama Tip: Don’t forget to periodically check your car station that your baby’s clothes and diapers don’t need to be changed if they’ve moved up a size. If you think you’re going to forget, consider setting a monthly reminder on your phone to take a look.

Waterproof Stroller Protector

Protect your stroller from blowouts with a waterproof stroller protector. I recommend getting a 2 pack so that you can easily just switch out to the second protector when your first becomes soiled.

It’s much easier to clean or replace a protector than your stroller!

Conclusion

Blowouts happen, Mama- but you’re officially one step closer to avoiding them and more prepared to handle them without breaking a sweat. When your little one has their next blowout, take a deep breath and remember that you’re amazing! Your little one may just need a bigger diaper and a whole lot of love.

Frosting a Smash Cake with Greek Yogurt

I’m in shock that I officially became a mom almost a whole year ago. We’ve had 365 days of practicing, growing, and learning together and I am whole heartedly going to miss my little one’s infant stage.

Having a fun birthday cake seems to be an important rite of passage into toddlerhood. While I am against serving added sugar before at least two years old, an exciting cake was important for his milestones and my own joy as a mom. Who doesn’t want a messy smash cake picture?! I struggled to find a healthier recipe for the cake and icing, so I’m sharing the recipes I used, Greek yogurt frosting guidance, and necessary equipment.

I made my little one a dinosaur inspired cake because our favorite book to read together has been Night Night, Dino-Snores. I tried to make the frosting look like little dinosaur scales. As someone who is, I assure you, not Martha Stuart, I am very pleased with how it turned out. It could easily be dragon themed, or just change the color scheme for unicorns, goldfish, sports, – really anything you’d like!

Smash Cake Material List

  1. Cake Recipe – After scouring for a good recipe, I used this smash cake recipe from The Artisan Life. I ended up not having to use a blender because I had ground flax seed and flour already. It was super easy and delicious! There are lots of options out there that will meet your baby’s dietary needs, so spend some time finding the one right for you
  2. Greek Yogurt for Frosting – My frosting was ONLY Greek Yogurt and coloring. I highly recommend using whole fat Fage brand yogurt. It’s already extremely thick and has no added sugar. Buy a large enough container to have adequate frosting for a base layer and frosting to decorate with depending on your cake size
  3. Cake Pans4 inch cake pans are the perfect size for an individual smash cake
  4. Plate – This seems silly – but consider where you’re going to frost your cake. Are you going to need to transfer to highchair or transport to a family member’s house? If you haven’t planned ahead, you could be looking at a real headache to move your cake. Consider a round piece of cardboard to easily move your cake
  5. Food Coloring – These gel food colorings worked absolutely fantastic and were gluten, dairy, and nut free, and vegetarian. They DO have sugar listed in the ingredients, but I decided that the two drops I was using probably wouldn’t amount to much. If you prefer all natural options, try using healthy foods like beets and strawberries to color your yogurt. Just be careful not to add too much fluid to the yogurt as you may need to strain it again
  6. Small Cake Frosting Spatula
  7. Frosting Tip – I used Wilton’s 21 Star tip which you can get in this Wilton Kit
  8. Frosting Bag – I used Wilton’s again, but you could easily just cut a corner off of a large plastic food storage bag too
  9. Plastic Wrap

Smash Cake Time Frame

I baked and decorated my cake over the course of two days. This gave it enough time to cook and cool where I wouldn’t have to worry about the frosting melting off. If you absolutely have to do it in just one day, you certainly could, but try to give yourself a at least a few hours of time between baking and frosting to allow your cake to cool completely and your yogurt frosting to thicken. Here’s the general schedule I followed:

Day 1: Baking Cake and Preparing Frosting

  1. Bake your cakes– Once your cakes are baked, pop them out of the cake pans and put them into the fridge to cool
  2. Strain your Greek Yogurt – Place a strainer in a bowl, put a few paper towels over the strainer, and empty your container of yogurt right on top. Your yogurt will slowly drip out excess water into the bowl. You can do this in just a few hours if you have to, but I left mine to strain over night to make sure it was very thick. I strained the entire 32 ounces of yogurt because I wasn’t sure how much I needed and wanted to have enough to experiment. If you’re frosting two 4-inch cakes, this should be more than enough

Day 2: Frosting The Smash Cake

  1. Trim and level your cakes. Your cakes most likely have a dome on top from baking. Carefully trim the dome off of the cake to level them. They should now be flat on the top and bottom and ready for frosting. Pro Mama Tip: Leave time for snacking on the trimmings here with your little one.
  2. Put one cake down on your plate. Using your small frosting spatula, scoop some of the strained yogurt onto the cake bottom and spread evenly. Once complete, place the second layer on top.
Your cake should look like this after step 2.

3. Using the frosting spatula, begin putting on the base frosting layer. Take your time to even out the frosting and scrape with the back of the spatula to flatten it. Fill in wholes with a dollop of frosting and scrape as needed.

Repeat until you are happy with the results, gently clean any frosting from your plate with a paper towel, and then throw the cake into the fridge for at least 10 minutes. This allows what you’ve done so far to set and prepare for the fun frosting part!

Base layer smoothing in progress.

4. Prepare decorative frosting. I separated mine into a few small cups and mixed my desired colors. If you’re using the concentrated coloring, start slowly with just a drop or two and add more if you need to – a little goes a long way!

Ramekins were perfect to mix my frosting, but any small bowl will do just fine. I made four small batches of decorative icing using the gel food colors:

  • Blue
  • Turqoise
  • Bright Green
  • One where I put a drop of all three food colors, which ended up looking like a playdough green (see the top right Ramekin)

5. Take your cake out of the fridge and begin frosting with the decorative frosting. Take a small dollop of one of the colors on the flat back part of your frosting spatula. Put the frosting filled part of your spatula at the bottom of your cake and swipe upwards. Wipe your spatula clean on a paper towel and then repeat with other colors. It’s important to completely clean the spatula or your colors may mix and become brown at some point.

6. Complete the first row and then move up a row. You can now keep the same color on your spatula and do several dots before switching since you now have the spacing based on the bottom row. This can save you from wasting time and frosting when you wipe it off. Repeat for as many rows as your cake needs.

7. Prepare frosting for piping. Take a large piece of plastic wrap and lay it on a flat surface. Spoon 5-7 rows of your icing onto the plastic wrap, alternating between colors. Roll the plastic sheet up onto itself and spin the edges shut like a small hot dog.

Frosting “hot dog”

8. Prepare your piping bag. Snip the corner of your piping bag (not too far- you can always cut more!) and then slip your piping tip into the hole. Cut off one side of your frosting hot dog bag you made in step 8. Slide the cut side down into the frosting bag into the tip. It’s now ready to push the frosting through the tip and pipe.

10. Pipe your frosting onto your cake. I love these easy piping directions from Wilton. I did not, but I do recommend practicing before going to town. I improved as I was going, and I think it could have turned out a lot better had I practiced a bit. Pro Mama Tip: I found at times my plastic wrap frosting bag slid down and blocked the tip. Try pulling it back up in your piping bag periodically to avoid this.

An voila! A beautiful smash cake frosted with only Greek yogurt.

Is Frosting with Greek Yogurt like Normal Frosting?

When strained properly, Greek yogurt acts very similarly to regular frosting. It can be spread and pipped out very comparably to make beautiful designs. Be sure to refrigerate the frosted cake after it is prepared and keep refrigerated until serving.

Final Thoughts

I am fully expecting my little one to literally take one bite of this cake, but I am so glad I took the time to make something special just for him. We’re halfway to my goal of no added sugar before two years and this cake is keeping us moving forward. Ultimately, the Greek yogurt frosting was a huge win for both health goals and having a blast decorating.

You got this, Mama. Share your cake creations in the comments. I would love to see them. And – oh yeah – happy Mama anniversary to you!

Pregnancy Prep Challenge – Week 3

I am 30% closer to being more prepared and organized for my next pregnancy. A serious pat on the back is needed here because this week was tough. Not because of the challenge itself, but because life seemed to keep getting in the way. My little one was sick and then also managed to start crawling. and I had to juggle work, several doctor’s appointments, and watching my little guy explore absolutely everywhere for the first time.

It’s never too late to join in and be ready for a happier, healthier, more prepared pregnancy with this 10-week challenge. If you’re just joining this challenge now and want to learn more, get started and download your free guides here:

I’m proud I stuck to it and I’m that much closer to being done. BUT- I have to seriously acknowledge how blessed I am to have a supportive partner that I can count on for this absolutely wild ride. No one really prepares you for when your little one isn’t feeling well.

This week I focused on my basement. Let me show you my progress, fellow Mama! As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn commission on qualifying purchases. Thanks for helping my small business.

For accountability, here is my completed week 3 challenge guide.

Daily Goal: Track Food in App

Hello there least favorite daily goal!

Through my challenge I am aiming to simply track my daily food in the FitBit App (I LOVE my FitBit Versa and have seriously had one form of a FitBit tracker or other for almost a decade- but that’s a different story). I am not trying to diet/lose weight because I am still nursing and trying to give myself as much grace as possible. My body is amazing and I am still in awe every day of what I helped create.

My only goal is to be more mindful of eating more nutrient dense foods. I need to keep providing nutrition to my little one, powering my own recovery, and preparing my body for another 18+ months of pregnancy and nursing ahead. My thought is that I will probably not want to log eating a donut and I’ll be more motivated to eat something a little more healthy!

I have absolutely still been splurging when I want it (who can say no to a cupcake????), but I am proud to say my daily diet is shifting into a more nutrient dense and fortifying routine I can feel good about.

My Withings scale (which I highly recommend!) just let me know that I have lost about 5% of my body fat over the past two weeks. I credit this to eating a more nutrient rich diet and regular exercise, which I’ll get more into next week.

Weekly Focus: Basement

Basements……… holders of so much junk from 3 moves ago. Am I right??? Mine had random boxes all over the place with miscellaneous junk. I literally had not touched anything down there since we moved it.

Time to go! Seriously. Why do we hold onto these things we don’t use? I am exercising my mental “let it go” muscles and learning to give up some of my random stuff.

For some reason, objects magically become more inportant when we’re touching them again. Some helpful questions I asked myself to let go of older items were:

  • Will I truly do that hobby again? Is it something I still enjoy and want to invest time into?
  • Does this thing even still work?
  • If I absolutely needed to, could I buy a replacement? (Think all those old wires we hold onto!)
  • Is this object’s memory something I can only get while holding this object?

When items couldn’t be donated and unfortunately had to be sent to the trash, I’ve been using heavy duty construction trash bags like these. They make it so much easier for me to take larger objects out to the trash without the bags leaking or ripping.

Basement before. Odds and ends from moving just seem to end up here. We don’t spend much time in the basement, and that’s something I’d like to change.
And after! So much more inviting.

There’s also a little sitting area down here that I have a few items ordered for. I’m making a cozy play area that my little one and I can come use. This will be an awesome place for us to craft, play, and explore in. I’m overjoyed to have claimed back the space and made it usable for us.

Week 3 Conclusion

This week wasn’t without it’s challenges. I spent a few minutes actually going back over my original challenge plan. Reminding myself why I am doing this went a long way in re-energizing and motivating.

I am gaining so much for completing this challenge and I really hope the same for you and your family. I am actually thinking of asking my husband if he’d like to try it! Why can’t we both prepare for my pregnancy? I’ll let you know how that goes!

Next week: My office. That’s perfect timing because my little one is all over the place crawling now and it could use a deep clean. Let me know how your challenge is going in the comments! I would genuinely love to hear from you.

Pregnancy Prep Challenge – Week 2

Week 2 has absolutely flown by. I entered it feeling energized and ready to accomplish my goals. I have been feeling so empowered by my results, it’s so motivating and gratifying to move forward when the going gets tough. I won’t lie- some days I feel tired and sore, but pushing forward has already been making my life feel easier!

It’s never too late to join in and be ready for a happier, healthier, more prepared pregnancy with this 10-week challenge. If you’re just joining this challenge now and want to learn more, get started and download your free guides here:

This week I focused on my kitchen. I’ll walk you through my progress and a few of my favorite kitchen organizing items. As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn commission on qualifying purchases. Thanks for helping my small business!

Daily Goal: Drink 128 Oz of Water

Between nursing, exercising, organizing, and everything else on a busy Mama’s plate, I work to drink 128 ounces of water every day. The ONLY way I can accomplish this is by making it fun – yes, FUN – to drink water. To make drinking water less of a chore or just plain old boring, the water has to be one of these things:

  • Amazingly tasty – I either buy some yummy Trader Joe’s carbonated water, brew some cold teas (like these from Twinings), or add a few drops of MiO Water Enhancers. My favorites are the ones with extra vitamins.
  • In a container I am excited to drink from – Putting water in adorable glasses goes a long way in helping me drink more. As silly as it sounds, I get excited to fill and refill my new glass cups with bamboo lids and straws. I went for the 16 oz versions so I can still add ice and make tasty ice coffees
  • Or, feel like a challenge or game! I use either a really large container like this one to visually see how much I’ve had to drink and feel accomplished, or I use my smart water bottle. This water bottle not only tracks what I drink all day, it glows to remind me to drink, and even sends me reminders on my phone. I always feel like I’m trying to beat a goal or catch up, which fits my personality.

Weekly Goal: Kitchen Organization

This week really helped me see that I can and should eliminate things I have not used in YEARS from my life. Cleaning out expired food from your pantry really lights your fire to purge and make space. This will serve as an amazing example for how ruthless I should be as I keep moving forward.

Those gifts I never touched? GONE. Appliances collecting dust? BYE. It feels so good to let go without guilt. What will happen to those items if I do nothing with them? They’ll just stay there taking up space and energy until maybe I move, and they just go someplace else. Enjoy some of my purge and favorite kitchen items below.

Coffee Bar before. Pure Chaos!
Coffee Bar After. So. Much. Better.

Coffee Bar Favorites:

This Bag Organizer fits perfectly in my drawer and helps me make sure I have the right types of bags. You choose the bag sizes and put on stickers, so it’s customizable to your preferences.
So satisfying and easy to stay organized! I got these drawer trays at Ikea, but here as some that are similar.
These soap dispensers keep so much clutter off my counters. The ones I bought are currently unavailable, but I actually like these glass dispensers more – boo! These came with a bunch of labels to choose from and you can add what you choose to fill them with.
Pantry BEFORE. Yikes!
Pantry AFTER. Holy Moly. Goodbye junk, hello space. I bought little gold bins like these to organize my little one’s food. Now I can so easily see what I am running low on. My little one has been absolutely loving these Bamba Peanut butter puffs and I am grateful he gets the regular allergen exposure.

Week 3: Done and Dusted

I am breathing a big sigh of relief that this week is in the bag. Reorganizing your kitchen can be really daunting since we spend so much time there and it serves so many purposes.

I didn’t realize that I had carved my pantry out for its own week later on in my challenge plan. I obviously accomplished more than I thought I could and will have a free week to fill. I am thinking I will prep and paint my deck outside for a fun fall space. Since the paint will be heavier duty, this it absolutely something I’d like to accomplish pre-pregnancy.

If you’re following along, stay strong Mama! Tell us about your progress in the comments and be proud you’re moving forward. See you next week!

Pregnancy Prep Challenge – Week 1

Using this Pregnancy Preparation challenge has been genuinely inspiring and motivating for me to make significant life changes. I’m so glad I am able to share it with others and hopefully help you too!

You can check out the overview here, but below I am breaking down my first week’s progress and staying accountable. Feel free to join in and start your own. I am just a few weeks in and am already noticing a meaningful difference around my home. Being prepared is also giving me more time to spend with my son and really soak in our time together while it’s just the two of us- something I’ll treasure forever!

Pregnancy Prep Week Guide

Download the weekly guide here. I recommend printing and prepping all ten of your guides at once so it’s never an excuse for hitting your next week running! These are based on the planning sheet you already made here. I’ve provided a blank copy and my example that’s all filled out.

Daily Goal: Prenatal Vitamins

One of my major daily goals is to remember taking my prenatal vitamins. I haven’t stopped taking them since I started back in 2019, but it’s so easy to forget if I took it or not on a daily basis. Mom brain! Having it checked off is just one less thing to think about.

My favorite prenatal is the Nature Made Prenatal with 250 tablets. Although they do make soft gels that also have DHA, I choose to take the Pink Stork DHA separately. I looked at many prenatal vitamin bottles and this one just seems to have the most vitamins and minerals- especially compared to gummy versions.

Being a on a solid prenatal vitamin regimen early helps ensure healthy early development and I’m working to replenish my own reserves before building a new life and continuing my breastfeeding journey. We give a lot physically for potentially years- so we have to get a lot!

Weekly Focus: Mudroom

For my first week I chose to focus on cleaning out and organizing my mudroom. It seemed like the perfect place to start because A. I couldn’t see the floor, and B. I store my cleaning supplies there, so it will help me work more efficiently through my next weeks.

I decided to take everything out and just start from scratch. How many times do you move into a new house, plop your things anywhere and everywhere, and never go back to reorganize! Starting fresh like this is so helpful to me because after a few years in your home, you know better where things should go for a better flow. Ultimately, I purged so much that I have a whole free shelf!

I found working in one area for the week very doable even with a 10-month-old scooting about. I was able to focus for about one nap period of each day to work through my goal. I love to just drink an extra coffee, turn on a good playlist, and get to work! If I really break a sweat, sometimes I count it towards my exercise goal for the day. Why the heck not?

Week 1 Before

Mudroom…. Yiiiiikes.
Good golly Miss Molly. I’m so glad I get to solve this!
Mudroom During Transformation. What the heck was on the walls?

Week 1 After

Mudroom After: Hello Floor! Nice to meet you.
I added a cozy storage bench and some art. Finally, this room is clean and reclaimed.

Week 1: Officially Complete

Finishing my first week makes me feel proud and motivated. If week one can feel so amazing, I can’t wait to get through my next nine. I already feel like this is going to help me be a better mom, because I feel less overwhelmed with “stuff.” Everything will have a place once I am done, making quick, daily cleaning SO easy.

Next week: The Kitchen. Dun Dun Dun!!! I’ll be Organizing my cabinets, pantry, and coffee nook. If you’re joining along- you’ve got this Mama! I hope you find your weekly focus areas as fulfilling as I have so far. You’re going to be so glad you did this when you’ve finished.

Comfy Crib Sheets

Our little ones spend a LOT of time in bed (although it doesn’t always feel that way, am I right?). Good crib sheets first and foremost need to be as safe as possible and should also help your little one snooze comfortably.

I’ve been very lucky to try out several kinds of sheets and want to share with you the best ones I have found. As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

Sheets NOT to Buy

First, I’d like to explain the type of sheet I try to avoid so that you can see what my judgement is based on. There are several key things I am looking for:

  • Between blow outs and spit up, I wash my baby’s sheets pretty frequently and I need them to last. Paying a little bit more money up front may ultimately be less expensive and environmentally friendly if I don’t have to constantly replace them.
  • Organic, natural materials, when possible. I think these materials are better for baby to be exposed to and can help regulate baby’s temperature during sleep.
  • A large enough sheet with a strong elastic to keep the sheet from slipping off the mattress. (I know this is probably very unlikely- but this is what mommy brain does, right?!)

Here is an example of a sheet I am choosing not to use for my little one. As you can see, the fabric is synthetic, slippery, and super thin. You can see right through it to the mattress. Also, the sheet just barely covers the back of the mattress. I prefer something that has much deeper pockets and grips onto the mattress to avoid sheet creep.

What not to buy: These sheets are so thin; you can see right to the mattress. I don’t think these will hold up through many laundry cycles.
What not to buy: These have a very small lip over the back of the mattress. I prefer deeper pockets, so it is more secure and stays in place.

Sheet 1: Mushie Extra Soft Fitted Crib Sheet

Ok- now onto the sheets I would recommend. If you know me, you know I am a major fan of all things Mushie! When I saw they had a 100% cotton Extra Soft Muslin Fitted Crib Sheet it was a no brainer for me to try.

These tick all the boxes! They are both natural and breathable, have 9-inch pockets to fit my mattress snuggly, and seem to become even softer with every wash. You cannot beat the adorable color options and they are a reasonably priced. I have used these in every season comfortably.

Mushie Sheets: You can see the deeper pockets and better grip on the mattress. The fabric is thick and you cannot see through it.
Mushie Sheets in my little one’s crib.

You can’t go wrong with Mushie to be honest and their sheets did not disappoint.

Sheet 2: Goumi Viscose Crib Sheet

Goumi is another fantastic brand that is Mama-owned and right from Oregon. Their Viscose Made from Bamboo Organic Cotton Crib Sheets are super soft, adorably cute, and absolutely one I would recommend. Viscose is such a luxurious material and I just love how it feels.

These sheets are also natural and breathable, have the deepest mattress pockets I have found, and come in great colors and patterns. I have used these in every season comfortably.

A few cons are that they are relatively more expensive than some other brands, and I have noticed a bit of pilling where my little one sleeps the most (I use these quite a bit to be fair!). Based on safety, softness, and patterns I still highly recommend them.

Goumi Sheets: Deep pockets for days! I love the overlap on these sheets and they feel very secure.
Goumi Sheets: They’re thick and luxurious while still being breathable. You cannot see through them to the mattress, and this is one of my favorite patterns.
Goumi Sheets on my little one’s crib.

Sheet 3: Burt’s Bees Baby Fitted Crib Sheet

I have these in both the moon and bumble bee pattern. 100% Organic Crib Sheet from Burt’s Bees Baby are a very affordable 100% breathable, organic cotton sheet option. They have a BEESNUG 360° premium elastic with extra stretch for a safer, snugger fit to help avoid sheet creep.

I love how these fit, the material is great, and again- these pattern options! So so cute. These have also help up fantastically through the wash. I have used these in every season comfortably.

Burt’s Bees Sheets: These have a solid pocket and come in great designs. The fabric is a bit see through on this design but not on the bumble bee pattern.

My Crib Set Up

Just in case you see something in my set up that catches your eye, I have the Amazon links here:

Monitor: Miku Pro Smart Baby Monitor with Floor Stand

Crib: Child Craft Atwood 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib

Sheep Mobile: The Peanutshell Musical Crib Mobile (They don’t seem to make the one I got unfortunately, but the other options are equally swoon worthy).

Crib Mobile: Fisher-Price Baby Sound Machine Settle & Sleep Projection Soother

Mattress: Newton Baby Essential Crib Mattress

Final Sheet Thoughts

Sheets are an area I highly recommend putting a little extra time and money into for your little one. They could spend over half their day snoozing on these fabrics, so it’s worth the extra investment to consider more natural fabrics and emphasize safety. These sheets have made it through my baby’s infancy and are still going strong. I expect they’ll last until he moves on to his toddler bed (insert sobbing here).

Do they make muslin sheets for adults? Asking for a friend.

10 Week Pregnancy Prep Challenge

It’s official- we’re thinking of baby number 2! While I am overjoyed at the thought of our family growing, there are definitely some things I’d wished I had done differently before I was pregnant the last time.

We had just moved into our new home a few months before finding out we were expecting, and a lot of my to-do list was put on hold. Let’s face it- some things are just more challenging when you have a watermelon for a stomach. Now that I have a better understanding of what my first months with a new little one are going to be like – and that they’ll be that much more challenging with a toddler in tow- I am not messing around when it comes to preparing for this pregnancy.

I’ve come up with an organized 10-week plan to meet my home organization, personal health, and financial mindset goals. I’ll be posting weekly to be accountable for accomplishing my goals and ultimately working towards my vision of a happier, healthier pregnancy while building helpful habits to keep long term. I invite you to join me or just follow along to watch this Mama get to work!

Building Your Pregnancy Prep Plan

I’ve created a super easy to follow 10 Week Pregnancy Prep Challenge Planning guide. Building your plan is super simple. There are just three main building blocks that set your goals over the ten weeks.

I’ve included a blank guide and one that I filled out for myself. You can use it as your own or just an inspiration. If you put in the time and effort to think about these items with purpose, you’re that much closer to being successful.

Part 1: 10 Week Prep Vision

List your top three reasons you’re ready to commit to completing this challenge and how they’ll make a difference in your pregnancy and postpartum experience. What main factors are motivating you to complete this challenge?

These can be absolutely any larger goal you’d like in your life that is going to be a meaningful change to you. My goals are focused on creating more time and space in my life for doing things I enjoy and eliminating stress. I’ll be focusing on these areas:

  • Organization– Eliminate clutter in my home that wastes my time and energy. Make space to invite enjoyment and relaxation. Break the cycle of buying more and be thoughtful around what I choose to bring into my home.
  • Health- Sometimes I am taking care of everyone and everything else to the point I honestly forget about myself. The fact that coffee is often my breakfast and lunch is not sustainable or even acceptable. I’ll be focusing on improving my nutrition, building muscle, and increasing my relaxation.
  • Financial- Grow a more thoughtful and frugal money mindset. I’d like to be more creative to reuse items I already have and purposeful in reducing spending.

If you’re ever feeling down over the course of your 10 weeks, return to your planning sheet to remotivate yourself. You’re doing this for an amazing reason and it’s so important to stay focused.

Part 2: Daily Goals

How many times have you looked up and it’s suddenly 3 PM and you’re still in your pajamas? We all could use some gentle daily guidance to help us remember to reach our goals.

Use this section to make a short list of gentle daily reminders that align with your prep plan visions. These can be absolutely anything you want to do on a daily basis from journaling, washing your face, drinking a protein shake, etc. etc. Try to think of a few for each of your vision ideas. Doing these for 10 weeks straight will go a long way towards building a regular, positive habit you’d like to encourage in your life.

Here are some of mine for inspiration:

  • Take a prenatal vitamin
  • Drink 128 Oz Water
  • Reduce my phone screen time
  • Read a chapter in a book

Part 3: Weekly Focus Ideas

List ten larger areas you’d like to focus on with greater intention one week at a time. Consider goals that are meaningful to your vision while still being achievable in a week’s time.

Examples of weekly goals could be organizing a specific room in your home, finishing a book, committing to meal prepping, learning a new skill, or really whatever is important to you meeting your vision goals!

Because I am particularly interested in organizing my home, I decided to list out the most problematic rooms in my home and I’ll tackle decluttering one over each respective week. This will also help me with my financial goals because I’ll be able to find things when I need them and be more thoughtful before I bring anything new into my space. Win-win!

Coming Next

My next post will show my free pregnancy prep challenge weekly plan and I’ll show what I’ve accomplished so far! Just beginning this challenge has been so exciting for me to think about taking control of my life and being as prepared as possible – in body, mind, and money- for more babies!

Committing to a 10-week Pregnancy Prep Challenge is absolutely going to set me in the right direction for being a better mom and wife, but also a better friend to myself. I look forward to enjoying the fruits of my efforts by having more time to spend on my family and myself. Please share some of the visions, daily goals, and weekly focus areas you’re considering.

Happy pregnancy-prep planning! Pst- check out my week 1 progress and get your weekly planning sheet here.

Buy, Buy Baby Buy-ble

Losing Buy, Buy Baby is a major loss to the young family community. I was lucky enough to have one nearby and am genuinely going to miss having a place to go to touch and feel baby products before I buy them.

I trusted Buy, Buy Baby to have a supply chain with quality products I could feel comfortable using with my precious little one. Parents and care givers have lost a very helpful guide in our space that will not be filled any time soon.

SO- I went to my Buy, Buy Baby on the first day of their closeout sale to gather as many brands in each department as I could for future reference. I have listed all brands I found in each department, so you may notice duplicated brands across sections. I genuinely hope this post serves as a guide for both new and experienced parents as you try to navigate an already challenging process of picking the right products for your family.

Where I was able to find the brand’s Amazon store, I included the link. This should make it pretty easy to add to a registry. My personal favorite brands are marked with an asterisk (*). Please like, share, and save to help out other parents. As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn commission on qualifying purchases.

5/10/2023 Update – I travelled to a second closing Buy, Buy Baby location and documented many additional brands.

Safety & Monitoring

This section had baby monitors, baby-proofing materials, air purifiers, humidifiers, baby gates, sound machines, pregnancy pillows, and baby loungers.

Feeding

This section had infant feeding, toddler feeding, bibs, burp clothes, breast feeding, pumping, bowls and plates, pacifiers, bottles, bottle cleaning, bottle drying, sanitizing, and (oddly) post-partum belly-wraps.

Bath and Potty

Diaper pails, potty training products, infant bathtubs, toddler bathtubs, baby bath toys.

Diaper Bags

Bedding

Baby blankets, crip sheets, sleep sacks, swaddles, crib mattresses, baby bedding,

Seating and Play

Pack and plays, highchairs, baby seats, baby bouncers, baby swings, baby activity mats.

Toys

Car Seats and Strollers

Baby Carriers

Clothing

Baby clothing from hats, head bands, onesies, premature baby clothing, newborn clothes to toddler.

Shoes & Socks

Furniture

This section is new as of 5/10/22. It includes what I found in the cribs, and baby furniture sections.

Diaper and Bath Products

Diapers, cloth diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, bath soaps, lotions, medications, baby nail clippers, baby first aid, baby food, post-partum supplies, lactation support.

Food

Closing Thoughts

Feel free to comment with any brands you think I’ve missed and should add as many items were sold out. This should be an awesome starting point to find great brands for your registry. I will be editing and adding to this list in the coming weeks to make it as complete as possible.

Don’t forget- you’re doing amazing putting in the effort to pick the best things for your little one. I really hope this list helps you and your family.

8 Thoughtful Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14th, 2023. It’s time to celebrate all the special moms, grandmothers, guardians, and inspirational figures of our lives. If this is your first Mother’s Day or your fifty first- congratulations to you, Mama!

Here’s a list of some awesome Mother’s Day gifts that will be sure to please everyone from tech savvy to the sappiest of us. As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

Birth Flower Necklace

These 18k gold plated dainty birth flower and birthstone necklaces are so sweet and meaningful. Each month has its own flower and description.

I’ll be getting one of these for each of my babies’ birth months to layer together. This one is the September Morning Glory version.

Mommy and Me Gift Set

This gift set will make any new mom’s heart MELT. They are handmade and sold through Amazon- how cool is that? You can customize and still get them pretty quickly in time for Mother’s Day.

Self Emptying Robot Vacuum

While anything iRobot is sure to please, the Roomba j7+ is my favorite robot vacuum. It empties itself at its home base for up to 60 days, which means that’s one thing off your plate. My favorite features are that this version actively avoids cords and -ahem- pet waste (which I imagine will come in handy during the toddler days too).

LED Facial Mask

Perfect for a mom who needs some self-care time, this at-home light therapy mask uses LED lights to help treat different face and neck skin concerns. While red is the most common for anti-aging and collagen boosting, you can change to a different light wave depending on your specific goal.

My favorite part about the mask is that when I wear it, I really have to sit down, relax, and tune out. It’s so relaxing and I feel like I invested in my wellbeing once I finish a quick session.

Cricut

Expect a huge thanks from a crafty or organized mom if you get her a Cricut. You can cut, write on, foil, and more on over 100 different materials using a really intuitive and easy computer application.

I have made everything from my baby shower thank you cards to pantry organization labels with this. There’s really no end to how creative and even functional this little machine can be!

Air Fryer

I can’t make it a single day without using my air fryer. This Ninja DZ401 Foodi 10 Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL 2-Basket Air Fryer makes feeding a growing family so easy!

You can cook two different foods in each basket and program both sides to finish cooking at the same time. Magic! I can essentially cook an entire meal in one little machine and cleanup is a breeze.

Kindle Oasis

Get any book at your fingertips with this Kindle Oasis. This is my favorite version of the Kindle because it’s waterproof and perfect by the pool or bath. You can also change the backlight from cool to warm depending on your preference.

Although a physical book is definitely special, having a Kindle lets me read in bed without disturbing my husband or get a new book while on the road.

Guided Memory Journal

The Tell Me Your Life Story, Mom: A Mother’s Guided Journal and Memory Keepsake Book is perfect for sentimental moms. By simply answering the 200 questions, you create a family heirloom. This is such a meaningful and fun conversation starter to enjoy for years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day

I wish you all wonderful a Mother’s Day. Eat lots of brunch and don’t turn down a single opportunity to treat yourself and/or the special Mama Bears in your life.

How to Survive Your First Post-Partum Period

After almost 15 glorious months without a period, Aunt Flo is officially back post-baby. As much as it is unpleasant, getting my period back reminds me of exactly what my body is capable of. It seems like less of a burden now and more of an “Oh yeah, I did that!” moment. The glass is definitely half full for me right now.

Here’s a little bit of what I have been going through to help you compare to your own journey and a few items that make it less of a pain. As always, you know your body better than anyone! If you feel like something isn’t right, be sure you reach out to your doctor to discuss your concerns. As an Amazon Affiliate, I earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

Is the first post-partum period worse than normal?

Yes. For me, it was a mega period. My flow has been much heavier during my post-partum periods, almost filling several pads throughout the day. I have also noticed some larger, nickel-sized clots when I previously had none. The fatigue, headaches, and the bloating are also on another level, as if a normal period isn’t bad enough. I’m on my second post-partum period and I don’t see an improvement yet.

Invest in Quality Pads

I have recently become extremely picky about my pads. During my 6-week healing period, I was using very mainstream synthetic pads daily and, to be honest, I really hated how they felt, how they absorbed, and even how they smelled. All of a sudden, I was really concerned by how “toxic” they felt to me. Although I’m sure they’re fine, I wanted something more natural and found the Honey Pot Company brand. Their pads are 100% natural, pH balanced, and made with clean cotton.

These pads feel utterly magical. I never thought I’d say that about a pad, but they are infused with herbs like mint to create a cooling effect you can actually feel. They smell absolutely divine and are quite absorbent. I have them in regular and overnight and plan to use these post baby number two instead of making my own padsicles.

They are super comfortable for an overnight pad, they adhere great and they smell amazing. I noticed other reviews mentioned a burning sensation but I didn’t experience that, I have extremely sensitive skin so I was very worried but I’ve used these pads for two cycles with no issues. I don’t know if it’s because everything is very tucked up on me (innie), so there’s nothing but regular skin touching the pad or what but they definitely don’t give me an issue. I only wear pads to sleep, I use tampons during the day, and I used to dread getting up in the morning and having to change the pad because it would always be very unpleasant. Ladies know what I’m talking about, 7 to 8 hours of flow doesn’t smell the best but with these pads I don’t smell anything unpleasant. In fact the first couple times I was half asleep and forgot I was using a new brand, and when I changed my pad I was trying to figure out what in my bathroom smelled so nice like lavender lol. So needless to say I really like these and don’t see myself ever switching from them. The only thing I can see as a negative is if you are wearing these all the time and have heavy flow, because they lack that plasticky layer that store bought pads have which keeps the part that touches you feeling dry all the time. One time in the middle of the night during heavy flow I had to wake up to go the bathroom, and when I pulled my panties back up it was a very cold wet unpleasant sensation. So just be aware of that, they are made out of natural materials which absorb a lot but it stays wet feeling so if that bothers you, you may need to change these a lot more frequently. I still stand by that I think they are a great choice, I know what I was younger and I used pads all the time I wish I had something like this because I wouldn’t have been so embarrassed about any bad smells during that time of month. Very reliable Helpful Report TB 5.0 out of 5 stars So worth it Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2022 Style: OvernightVerified Purchase These pads are amazing! I have heavy flow during my cycle and started getting allergic reactions to the pads that I normally wear (have been using them for 8 years). After talking about it, my boyfriend surprised me with new pads just before my cycle and these are amazing! I was surprised when I wore them for the first time. My unmentionables were on fire! There’s a cooling effect to these pads that I forgot he mentioned from reading about it. The mint sensation lasted about 5 minutes and I felt so comfortable afterwards. I will say, you can feel the freshness every time you wear them, but the fresh and cooling feeling afterwards is so worth it. I don’t know if these had a direct effect on the length of cycle, but I do feel like my menstruation period got shorter. I do wish they had some overnight ones – for heavy night flows. I haven’t had an issue but normally a heavy flow and am always conscious. Either way, I love these pads. 10/10 would recommend. 2 people found this helpful Helpful Report JT 3.0 out of 5 stars Hate the mint Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2023 Style: OvernightVerified Purchase I love the size and length of these. They’re perfect for my heavy flow days. No leakage whatsoever. However, i HATE the cooling effect, it’s more of a burning sensation, especially after shaving. Trying to find non-herbal ones. Helpful Report Livvv 5.0 out of 5 stars Must have! Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2023 Style: OvernightVerified Purchase This brand is pricier than others, but is a game changer for nights. This 12 pack lasted me a year, since I used 1 every cycle on the night of my heaviest flow. A period already feels gross, but something about sleeping on the heaviest day of the cycle just makes you feel even worse. These minty fresh pads make me feel so much cleaner and less uncomfortable during the night. It’s so worth it! If you’re on the fence about switching pad brands, just try these ones out for night time at least, you won’t be disappointed. Report sleepy anon 4.0 out of 5 stars amazing !!! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2022 Style: OvernightVerified Purchase this product is sooo wonderful. this is the only thing that has helped alleviate my cramps and the constant dull ache I get during my period. i’ve not had to take any pankillers and i’ve felt more calm and comfortable than ever. the sensation is unusual at first, but once I got used to that, it was such a relief. I highly recommend to try them at least once. my only complaint is that I wish they were available in the uk outside of amazon. the price here is extremely high, and I know they don’t sell the full range, which is a shame. If I could afford to, I would buy these every single month Report Stacey 5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Pads for Heavy Flows Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2022 Style: OvernightVerified Purchase I suffer from severe heavy bleeding and this is the greatest pad I’ve ever tried. Before discovering The Honey Pot Company, I was wearing Tena nappies lined with pads. It was super uncomfortable and bulky. As thin as The Honey Pot Company’s pads are, they really hold a lot and the wings really protect you from any accidents. All my anxieties are gone. Use your Peri Bottle for your Period

You probably have these laying around pot-birth anyway, why not give your peri-bottle some new life? I fill up with warm water and use this after using the restroom.

It’s a little joy from my birth healing period that I am choosing to carry forward. A dear friend gifted me with a bunch of Frida Mom post-partum care and it all worked wonderfully.

Drink Lots of Fluids

As a breastfeeding mom, I already challenge myself to drink 128 ounces of water daily to help with my overall hydration and breast milk supply. I drink two of these bottles everyday.

If you’re breastfeeding, you can typically expect your milk supply to drop during your time of the month. It should return to normal once your period is over, but it never hurts to stay hydrated to keep your supply as high as possible.

Focus on Self Care

Having your period in general is an unpleasant event. Now, you’ve added taking care of a little human on very little sleep into the mix. Don’t forget to spend energy on yourself. I know it’s difficult to find spare time, but believe it or not, YOU are a priority too.

I’ve actually been working out, talking baths, and working on some cross word puzzles (lame, I know) this week. Consider reading a book, diving into a good show, or digging up an old hobby you haven’t worked on in a long time.

You, your partner, and baby, will be thankful you’re refilling your cup- especially during that time of the month.

You’ve Got This Mama!

Your period is a powerful reminder of what your body can do! Celebrate it and take care of yourself.
