Why Greek Yogurt Makes a Healthy Smash Cake Frosting
- No refined sugar → gentle on baby’s tummy.
- Thick & creamy → spreads like buttercream without the sugar.
- Photo-perfect → smooth, vibrant colors with just a drop of gel coloring
Traditional buttercream frosting is very high in sugar and butter, which many parents prefer to avoid for a baby’s first birthday cake. Greek yogurt frosting is a lighter alternative that still looks beautiful on a smash cake while providing protein, calcium, and beneficial probiotics.
Must-Have Tools for Frosting a Smash Cake
The right tools can help elevate your cake. Here’s what I used:
- 4-inch cake pans → the perfect size for baby smash cakes. They bake evenly and make adorable layers. 👉 Shop them here
- Strainer → to strain your Greek yogurt to make it extra thick.
- Paper Towels → for lining your strainer
- Offset spatula → this small, angled spatula makes smoothing frosting so much easier. 👉 Grab mine here
- Saran Wrap → for getting your frosting into the piping bags
- Frosting Bag and Tips → for making designs👉 here is a reusable set
- Pre-cut parchment rounds → no tracing, no sticking. Absolute sanity saver. 👉 Get them here
- Gel food coloring → a drop is all you need. 👉 Check it out here or try this plant based option from Wholefoods
- Mixing bowls + hand mixer → mixes the colors beautifully in seconds. 👉 See my favorite set here
✨ Pro Mama Tip: Treat yourself to a Cake Decorating Kit. They usually include the offset spatula and piping tools you need (win!). You’ll also be using the kit for future birthdays and school events, so it’s very worth the investment!

Step-by-Step: No Sugar Smash Cake Frosting
- Strain the yogurt → Line your strainer with several paper towels and spoon your Greek yogurt right on top. Put the strainer over a bowl and pop it in your fridge for at least one hour. I used an entire container of Fage Greek yogurt and let it strain over night.
- Prep the pans → Line your 4-inch pans with parchment rounds. This guarantees your cakes slide out cleanly.
- Bake the cakes → After scouring Pinterest, I used this smash cake recipe from The Artisan Life. You can also check out my helpful round up of 10 healthy smash cake recipes.
- Cool the cakes → Allow your cakes to cool completely before frosting.
- Divide the yogurt → Divide your strained yogurt into different containers based on the number of colors you are making. I used ramekins and found it really easy.
- Add color (optional) → Stir in a drop of gel food coloring to each of your containers. You can definitely use a hand mixer to evenly distribute the color. Add color and mix until you get the shade you are looking for.
- Frost the cake → Use an offset spatula to spread yogurt between layers, then smooth frosting over the top and sides. Fill piping bags and frost as desired (I’ve outlined my scale design in more detail below).
- Chill & serve → Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes so the frosting sets before baby digs in.

How to Frost Scales with Greek Yogurt Frosting for Baby
If you want to decorate your cake like I did, here are a few pictures and directions to show you how I made the scales.

Cover and smooth the frosting all over your cake. A cake turntable would have made this much easier- I’ll remember that for next year!
Throw the cake into the fridge for at least 10 minutes. This allows what you’ve done so far to set and prepare for the fun frosting part!

Ramekins were perfect to mix my frosting, but any small bowl will do just fine. I made four small batches of decorative icing using the gel food colors:

Take your cake out of the fridge and begin frosting with the decorative yogurt smash cake frosting. Take a small dollop of one of the colors on the flat back part of your frosting spatula. Put the frosting filled part of your spatula at the bottom of your cake and swipe upwards. Wipe your spatula clean on a paper towel and then repeat with other colors.

Complete the first row and then move up a row. You can now keep the same color on your spatula and do several dots before switching since you now have the spacing based on the bottom row. Repeat for as many rows as your cake needs.

Prepare yogurt frosting for piping. Take a large piece of plastic wrap and lay it on a flat surface. Spoon 5-7 rows of your icing onto the plastic wrap, alternating between colors. Roll the plastic sheet up onto itself and spin the edges shut like a small sausage.

Prepare your piping bag. Snip the corner of your piping bag (not too far- you can always cut more!) and then slip your piping tip into the hole. Cut off one side of your yogurt frosting sausage bag you made in the step above. Slide the cut side down into the frosting bag into the tip. It’s now ready to push the frosting through the tip and pipe.

Pipe your frosting onto your cake. I love these easy piping directions from Wilton. I did not, but I do recommend practicing before going to town. I improved as I was going, and I think it could have turned out a lot better had I practiced a bit. Here’s a really cool practice board from Wilton!
Pro Mama Tip: I found at times my plastic wrap frosting bag slid down and blocked the tip. Try pulling it back up in your piping bag periodically to avoid this.
And voila! A beautiful smash cake frosted with only Greek yogurt.

Here’s another really cute ombre version I did with healthy smash cake frosting. I really don’t think you can tell its yogurt frosting for cake, do you?

❓ FAQs About Smash Cake Frosting
Can Babies Eat Greek Yogurt Frosting?
Yes, most babies can safely eat Greek yogurt frosting for cake when it’s made with plain, full-fat yogurt and minimal sweetener. Yogurt is often introduced around 6 months of age and provides protein, calcium, and beneficial probiotics. If your baby has a dairy allergy or sensitivity, consult your pediatrician before serving.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! Frost up to 24 hours in advance. Store in the fridge so it stays firm. If you frost too early, it may dry and crack.
How do I get brighter colors?
Use concentrated gel food coloring—a drop is enough. Liquid coloring may water down the yogurt.
Is Frosting with Greek Yogurt like Normal Frosting?
When strained properly, Greek yogurt first birthday cake frosting can be used very similarly to regular frosting. It can be spread and piped out to make beautiful designs. Be sure to refrigerate the frosted cake after it is prepared and keep refrigerated until serving.
