15 Low/No-Tox Home Swaps Every Mom Should Make (Simple, Affordable + Pregnancy-Safe)

Creating a healthier home doesn’t need to be overwhelming or expensive. As busy moms, we don’t have time for complicated systems, endless products, or major lifestyle overhauls. What does make an impact?

A handful of simple, high-impact low tox home swaps.

These are some low/no-tox substitutions I use in my own home. These easy non toxic swaps are simple, affordable, and backed by EWG resources where possible. Whether you’re already knee-deep in baby bottles and toddler snacks or preparing for pregnancy, these swaps help reduce unnecessary chemical exposure in a way that’s sustainable and mom-approved.

Many of these ideas fit into the zero trimester, or the season before pregnancy. You can explore the full framework inside my Pregnancy Prep Hub.

1. Dirty Labs Dishwasher Detergent Low Tox Home Swap

Dirty Labs Dishwasher detergent uses enzymatic cleaning—powerful but gentle, with no dyes, chlorine, SLS, parabens, or artificial fragrance. Perfect for dishes, bottles, sippy cups, and breast pump parts. I get the yellow scented version, and it smells amazing!

If you’re wondering how to start low tox living, your dishwasher detergent is an amazing, high–impact beginner low tox swap since it touches items you use absolutely every day.

Pro-tip: Grab the BPA-free ceramic canister. It’s so sleek and beautiful that I leave it on my counter all the time.

2. Meliora Laundry Detergent

Meliora Laundry Powder is one of the cleanest, simplest laundry detergents available. Just a handful of purposeful ingredients—no fragrance, dyes, or questionable “proprietary blends.”

Once you have a canister, the refills are less expensive. I also snagged the Oxygen Brightener for a great bleach alternative and another easy non toxic swap.

3. Force of Nature All-Purpose Cleaner

If you buy just one non-toxic cleaning swap, make it this. Force of Nature replaces 90% of household cleaners—from kitchen counters to bathroom disinfecting.

Of course, test in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it’s safe for your surfaces, but I use it on absolutely everything from pet accidents and toilet seats to door knobs.

  • EPA-registered
  • Kid-safe + pregnancy-safe
  • No fragrances or harsh chemicals

👉 Pro Tip: Set up a regular capsule subscription for one less thing to remember.

4. Glass Food Storage Containers

Safe, durable, microwave-friendly, and completely free of microplastics and chemical leaching. Great for toddler snacks, meal prep, and leftovers. This Rubbermaid Glass Food Storage set is BPA-free, microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe.

5. Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

One of the most powerful swaps you can make. RO systems reduce:

  • PFAS
  • heavy metals
  • pesticides
  • chlorine/chloramine
  • microplastics

This one can be an investment overall, but it ultimately helps the whole family and is especially important to growing little ones to have healthy water. You can get a countertop version or get an undersink system with a faucet put into your countertop.

6. HEPA Air Purifier

Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoors. A true HEPA air purifier traps dust, allergens, microplastics, smoke, and VOC particles. This Levoit Air Purifier covers up to 1073 square feet.

Best places to run one: nursery, primary bedroom, main living area, playroom.

If you love simple home systems that make life easier, you’ll also love my Skylight Calendar Review—it’s the one thing that finally helped us stay consistent with routines, cleaning, and daily resets.

7. Sealed HEPA Vacuum Cleaner

Just as important as an air purifier. A sealed HEPA vacuum ensures the dust you suck up doesn’t get blown back out into the room, which is critical for babies and toddlers playing on the floor. I continue to be a huge fan of Dyson cordless vacuums. I’ve used several versions for years.

8. Non-Toxic Cookware

Swap out old, scratched nonstick pans that may contain PFAS.

9. Low-Tox Baby Bottles & Toddler Cups

Great alternatives to traditional plastics:

Pro Tip: Pumping and using the pitcher method? These Ball mason jars are perfect; I have one jar for day milk and a second for night pumps. Check out my Pumping & Nursing hub to see how I made is a whole year formula-free.

10. EWG-Approved Personal Care Products

Pregnancy and postpartum skin is extra sensitive. Swap to fragrance-free or EWG-Verified options for:

  • shampoo/body wash
  • skin care (I switched to all OSEA when I was pregnant, great brand!)
  • belly oils (This OSEA Algae Body Oil was a life saver for itchy pregnancy belly)
  • diaper cream
  • hand soap
  • mineral sunscreen

11. Ditch Artificial Fragrance

Synthetic fragrance = VOCs + hormone disruptors. Swap out:

  • plug-ins
  • candles
  • room sprays

Replace with: essential oil diffusers, beeswax candles, stovetop simmer pots.

12. Non-Toxic Hand Soap & Dish Soap

High-contact items that matter more than we think. Choose fragrance-free, dye-free, SLS/SLES-free formulas. Branch Basics Gel Hand Soap is EWG Verified and Molly’s suds is a great option for dish soap.

13. Cleaner Lunchboxes & Water Bottles

Choose stainless steel, silicone, or glass options without internal plastic liners.

Avoid anything that gets cloudy, scratched, or smelly.

14. Safe Water Bottles for Mom

Choose stainless steel, glass with a silicone sleeve, or titanium.
Avoid: aluminum with epoxy liners, smelly plastics.

15. Organic Cotton Kids’ Clothing & Sleepwear

Babies and toddlers have thinner skin and spend all day in their clothes. My favorite brands are Burt’s Bee Baby and Colored Organics.

Benefits:

  • no pesticides
  • no chemical flame retardants
  • breathable + gentle for eczema
  • ideal for sleepwear, swaddles, crib sheets, burp cloths, rompers

Pro Tip: Babies spend half their day sleeping, consider swapping to an organic crib sheet. I love Burt’s Bees and mushie brand for no/low tox home swaps.
